PREventing WAter Pollution by PHARMaceuticals in Northwest-Europe by transregional innovation

(in het Engels)

Pharmaceutical residues are increasingly contaminating water bodies across Northwest Europe – a growing concern driven by ageing populations, rising medicine use, and climate change. Up to 90% of orally administered medicines, including antibiotics and hormones, can enter water systems after use. These residues may disrupt aquatic ecosystems, influence antibiotic resistance, and hinder clean drinking water production. The PREWAPHARM-project aims to address the issue of medicine residues through a strong collaboration of Northwest European experts from the healthcare and water sectors.

14:00 - 14:05

Urgency of the medicine residues problem in Northwest-Europe

Arnout Pottie

Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij (VMM)

Arnout Pottie from the Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij (VMM) will open the presentation by highlighting the urgency of the problem of medicine residues in north-west Europe, particularly in Flanders.

14:05 - 14:10

Pharmaceuticals in wastewater: prioritization lists and challenges

Emma Witteveen

RIVM

Emma Witteveen from the Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) will shed light on types of pharmaceuticals in wastewater, including prioritisation lists and challenges. Her presentation will inform water technology companies, public authorities, and healthcare institutes about which pharmaceuticals should be monitored and removed from wastewater in the coming period.

14:10 - 14:20

How can the PREWAPHARM-project contribute to reducing medicine residues in water?

Erika Brattinga-Róth

TCNN

Erika Brattinga-Róth from project leader TCNN will explain how the PREWAPHARM project can contribute to reducing medicine residues in water by fostering strong collaboration between NWE experts from the healthcare and water sectors. This approach involves a combination of a transnational strategy and comprehensive regional action plans, offering practical solutions with a strong focus on the implementation of best practices and capacity building.

14:20 - 14:45

Approach of PREWAPHARM to ensure broad implementation of promising solutions and a Europe-wide impact

LIST

The work package leaders – Eelko Hak (University of Groningen), Pieter-Jan De Buyck (VITO) and Jimmy Roussel (LIST) – will share further details of the PREWAPHARM approach to ensure the broad implementation of promising solutions and Europe-wide impact. The practical solutions to be developed will partly focus on medicine use and partly on wastewater treatment.
