PFAS and other micropollutants: proven technologies – case studies – the legal situation
(In Dutch)
PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances), the best-known group of micropollutants, is a collective name for more than 6,000 substances that contain a combination of fluorine compounds and alkyl groups. PFAS do not occur in nature. They are chemically synthesized by humans (“forever chemicals”) and are found in everyday products such as clothing, fast food packaging, non-stick pans and fire-fighting foam, pesticides, etc.
These can accumulate in organisms and some are carcinogenic.
Other micropollutants are present in small concentrations in (waste) water. These are harmful contaminants, and must therefore also be removed. They include residues of medicines such as painkillers and contraceptive pills
Numerous Flemish technology companies have developed solutions to tackle the problem and are already putting them into practice.
Various solutions and cases will be presented during the conference. A wide-ranging overview of the current legislative situation will also be given.
